Proverbs 18:11-12(KJV):

11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

ouch...i've kinda procrastinated on these, haven't i? no real excuse, i just haven't done it. anyway.

when one places their faith in their own strength, their own possessions, they disregard the omnipotent power of Almighty God, choose not to trust him with their lives. in these verses, the example used is money. two things must be noted: money is a finite object, and it can be lost just as fast as it can be gained-in the blink of an eye. money isn't a constant, something that stays the same throughout your life. in fact, the only truth about money is enough is never enough, from the world's perspective. college students spend 80-100 grand in an attempt to make enough money to live comfortably, then wind up paying off loans until they're gray-bearded. it's a repetitive cycle that is rarely broken.

oppositely, God is the most constant thing in the universe. he's been around forever, he's always been perfect, always been holy, always been omnipotent. one cannot do better than to place oneself in the care of the most powerful and loving being in the universe.

Proverbs 17:13-15

Proverbs 17:13-15(KJV):
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

ugh...been far too long. i actually did post a devo last week, unfortunately it didn't save or something .

anyway. best way to summarize the above verses is a verse from Galatians, specifically 6:7-"what you sow, you shall also reap". Macheavellian tactics go out the window, using evil tactics for the greater good isn't justified-see verse 15.

i don't totally understand the language, it's a little "Ye Olde English"-y for my taste. however, i'm fairly certain verse 14 is talking about dealing with things right away, not letting them fester and hurt everyone involved.

on that note, time for personal experience time! after having some pretty serious relationship issues last summer, i didn't deal with the people involved for over seven months. those seven months, for the most part, were pretty much hell. sleeping isn't easy when stuff hasn't been resolved. moral of the story? take care of your problems ASAP, lest they consume you, as mine almost did. i became angry and cynical (still am, but it's more controlled now), and was just kinda wandering through the darkness, not really going anywhere with God. i just wanted to get out of the situation, but that wouldn't have happened until i left for college this fall. even then, i'm a dweller, and my problems wouldn't have stayed here, i would've taken my sleepless nights to Grove City with me.

Proverbs 1:8-9

Proverbs 1:8-9(KJV): "My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck."

learned this lesson the hard way: go against your parents, pretty good chance you're going to get burned. regardless of how smart you think you are or how wrong you think they may be, if your parents are Christians grounded in the Word of God, odds are that they are right, as much as it pains me to admit. i can't imagine how much stronger my walk with God would be if i'd listened to my parents...and others' parents as well...about certain issues. and if you think you're fooling your parents, you could be, but really, what are you gaining? you're depriving yourself of the relationship you can have with them...remember, they're your parents, they have to love you, but it's up to you to enjoy spending time with them. if you push away, your call, but really, you're hurting yourself as much as your hurting them.

unless your parents are abusive, or detached, or apathetic...then that's a whole different ball of wax. parental figures are needed, still, but finding them isn't quite as easy. so remember, when you see that little guy walking next to his dad, not wanting to be anywhere else in the world, or the little girl skipping next to her mother as they walk down the sidewalk, that the little child you see will one day grow up and become a surly teenager just like you or me...and then think to yourself, who changed, them or you?

to wrap up, parents are a blessing, don't abuse them. don't walk all over them. don't treat them as simply an ATM machine (mine are too poor to do that anyway). remember that they would sacrifice anything for you...and then remember that their love for you is only a fraction of the love God has for you.

pretty wild, huh?

Proverbs 1:7

Proverbs 1:7(KJV): "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

well, i'm jacked up on codoine right now...having 4 wisdom teeth yanked will do that to you. fortunately, this is basically self-explanatory, and i don't have to do any heavy thinking-attempting to do so leads to me seeing blue monkeys assaulting my house from the woods. i've tried to fight them off twice, to no avail...currently three of them are eating my kid brother's right leg at my dinner table.

anyway, enough foolish drug-induced randomness. on to the interpretation. fools despise wisdom and instruction. not sure that this could be any clearer-to reject wisdom and advice, especially from those more mature in Christ than you are, is the defining characteristic of a fool. if the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, then it stands to reason that any path taken other than the way of God is not going to lead you to understanding and knowledge. knowledge and intellect are 2 very different things, though. someone can be very smart, and yet be a fool. and many of those wise in the Lord aren't always the brightest tools in the shed. genius and wisdom do not walk hand in hand...but one who has both is blessed beyond measure.
